First decide whether you need hand support, open-edge protection or both. The staircase may remain if its condition and fixing locations are suitable. A change of infill should not be based on appearance alone.
Describe the route and users
Provide photos, flights, landings, open sides and nearby doors. State difficulties and need for support on one or both sides. Have grip, continuity, ends and remaining passage assessed. Handrails and brackets occupy space; do not promise unchanged clear width.
Distinguish support from fall protection
A wall handrail does not replace infill at an open side. Define required assembly and landing connections. Horizontal cables do not guarantee prevention of climbing or inherent child safety. Open glass guarding is not an acoustic partition and does not guarantee isolation from an adjacent room.
Check substrates before retention or drilling
Assess treads, stringer, wall or lining, old fixings and damage. Clarify load transfer. Top-of-tread fixing is not automatically simplest or cheapest. Retaining posts while replacing infill requires validation of the altered assembly.
