Installing a heat pump: from survey to acceptance inspection
Published on 31 July 2026 · Verified on 18 September 2026 · The Mestravaux.lu team
A heat pump project starts before ordering the equipment. Building adaptations, procedures and contractor availability determine the schedule. These steps identify the deliverables, outstanding checks and possible interruption of heating.
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Gather plans, consumption history, radiator details and planned insulation.
- Request reasons for capacity, operating temperatures and backup heating.
- Confirm location and procedures before fixing the order.
- Explicitly plan heating and hot water continuity during work.
- Distinguish commissioning, acceptance inspection and grant payment application.

1. Survey the building and usage
Prepare plans, consumption history, heating type, hot water needs and intended renovations. The visit should identify location, connection routes and maintenance access. Annual consumption helps document the project but does not alone replace sizing assessment.
| Étape | Délai indicatif | Budget associé |
|---|---|---|
2. Obtain a coherent heating proposal
Ask for the adopted heating load, temperatures, retained or changed emitters and backup role. Explain operation before and after any planned insulation. The proposal should address hydraulics, balancing, hot water and electricity requirements rather than select solely by floor area.
3. Fix the location and check noise
Identify neighbours, openings, obstacles, vibration and condensate drainage. Klimabonus acoustic conditions provide a Schallrechner calculation route where the relevant criteria require it. Complete this assessment before installation using the chosen model and location. A quiet label in a brochure does not replace site assessment.
4. Clarify permissions, grants and quotation
Ask the municipality about the proposed configuration; check any drilling procedures separately. Identify the grant regime, dates, documents and application owner before commitment. Itemise removal, adaptations, connections, commissioning and inspection. Do not presume an awarded grant or universal pre-financing in 2026.

Request a quote5. Plan work and interruption
Confirm equipment availability and contractor schedule. Define the period without heating or hot water, occupant needs and any temporary solution. Duration depends on removal, connections and testing; a guaranteed interruption of only a few hours is not stated here.
6. Separate commissioning from acceptance
For heat pumps covered by the 2025 regulation, connected to central water heating and commissioned after 19 September 2025, the company requests SCRB acceptance within the following month. Air-to-air and hot-water-only units fall outside this scope; their other obligations still require checking. Ask for evidence of the request, documents and follow-up of outstanding findings. First start-up does not replace this step.
7. Understand settings and monitor use
At handover, have heating, hot water, backup, alerts and assistance contacts explained. Keep initial settings, manuals, invoices and reports. Agree on consumption and comfort follow-up and how discrepancies will be addressed. A few days of consumption do not establish annual performance.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I allow?
Request a project-specific schedule separating assessment, procedures, delivery, work and inspection. No universal duration is established.
Can occupants stay at home?
Check access, interruptions and occupant needs with the company; continued comfort should not be assumed.
Must radiators be replaced?
The assessment should identify those usable at proposed temperatures and any required changes.
Does commissioning close the project?
Not by itself: check inspection, outstanding items, documents, instructions and remaining grant procedures.
Who requests acceptance inspection?
For installations within this regulation’s scope, the commissioning company applies to SCRB within the following month.
