Quote: steel beam and structural strengthening
E.g.: installing an IPN beam after removing a load-bearing wall, floor reinforcement

Opening a wall or strengthening a floor changes the building’s load path. The everyday label IPN does not identify the beam to buy: its section and bearings follow from the design. Have the project assessed before ordering steel or starting demolition.
Document the existing building
Supply available plans for affected levels, photos of both faces, desired width, available headroom and known alterations. Mention the basement, cracks, services and occupation. Agree necessary investigations; neither a photograph nor wall thickness alone establishes the answer.
Assess what supports the beam
Belgian engineering practice ARK describes assessing the beam, its bearings and load transfer to lower levels. Include these and any strengthening in your commission. This illustrates a technical approach; Belgian prices and administrative rules do not automatically apply in Luxembourg.
Assign site responsibilities
Have designer and contractor agree execution drawings, checks, temporary stability and inspection stages before starting. Assign opening, propping, reinforcement and installation. Assess occupation for this site; a dust sheet does not establish that remaining in the work area is safe.
Plan handling and finishes
Describe stairs, doors, unloading route and working space. Cutting a beam to get it inside requires a designed connection, not improvised reassembly. Price any redesign. Exposed finishes or boxing must be compatible with any required fire protection.
Confirm formalities and records
Check formalities with the municipality and required co-ownership permissions with the building manager before work. An internal alteration is not automatically exempt. Request as-built drawings, agreed calculations, inspections and closure of defects; avoid blanket promises of a structure stronger than before.
Indicative prices in Luxembourg
On quotation
Steel weight or opening width cannot price the whole intervention. Separate design, investigations, bearings, temporary works, opening, supply, installation and finishes. A beam-only quote is not equivalent to a completed alteration.
Subsidies and grants
No grant is deducted from the budget shown here. If a quote mentions support, request the exact scheme and confirmation of your eligibility before including it in financing.
Frequently asked questions
Must the beam be an IPN?
No. The section follows the design; IPN is not a generic name for every steel beam.
Can a photo identify a load-bearing wall?
Photos can help prepare a discussion but do not replace necessary investigation.
Can we stay in the house?
Have occupation and restricted areas assessed before making arrangements.
Are internal openings always exempt from formalities?
No. Check municipal requirements and relevant co-ownership permissions.
