Quote: retaining wall and gabions
E.g.: rockery, gabion, dry-stone wall

A wall retaining soil must be defined around the site and its use. Provide levels, photos, proposed length and uses above and below: garden, parking, building or pool. State whether this is new construction or an existing wall showing movement. Stone colour comes after defining the retaining task.
Describe ground and future uses
AQC links masonry retaining wall damage to design, water and additional loads, and calls for assessment of ground sliding. A low wall is therefore not exempt from examination simply by a universal height threshold.
Compare systems designed to retain ground
Gabions, rockwork, dry stone and mortared masonry cannot be selected by appearance alone. Ask the designer for dimensions, footprint, materials and supports. For gabions, identify basket system, connections and filling. A decorative stone basket does not establish retaining suitability.
Address water even with gabions
Maccaferri lists soil, water and loads among gravity wall design inputs. Voids between stones alone do not establish controlled water conditions behind the structure. Specify collection, discharge and inspection access.
Organise construction and handover
Confirm boundaries, access rights and local procedures before excavation. Have neighbouring structures and construction sequence addressed. At handover, request as-built plans, maintenance instructions and use limitations. Report future parking, fill or equipment above the wall for assessment before changing the planned situation.

On quotation
The budget covers a structure designed for a specific situation, not just its visible face. Separate design, preparation, foundations, structure, water management and reinstatement. A square metre rate is comparable only when its reference area, wall geometry and included work match.
Subsidies and grants
No grant is deducted from the budget shown here. If a quote mentions support, request the exact scheme and confirmation of your eligibility before including it in financing.
Frequently asked questions
Can a decorative gabion retain my ground?
Do not assume so. Have the complete assembly justified for the soil and loads.
Does low height remove the need for assessment?
No universal threshold is established here. Required checks depend on the site and consequences of failure.
Can I add another row later?
Have the structure reassessed before increasing height; this changes the retained configuration.
What should I provide for a moving wall?
Photos from a safe distance, observed changes and available plans. Seek diagnosis before limiting work to surface repair.
