KNX and wireless automation: compare functions, installation and upkeep

KNX does not mean wired only: the standard supports several communication media. Start with required functions and the building. A few controlled sockets and comprehensive lighting, shading and heating control are not equivalent offers simply because both are called home automation.

Define comparable scope
List lighting circuits, blinds, controls and heating zones. Specify local control, automation, remote access and feedback for each function. Separate supplied equipment, configured features and future options. Verify integrations against exact references.
Choose around feasible work
Identify existing cables, accessible routes and finishes to restore. For radio, test coverage at intended positions and check power arrangements. Wireless does not mean no power, electrical work or maintenance. In new construction, also compare conventional controls where automation has no identified use.
Test dependencies
CSA describes Matter as local communication; away-from-home control needs an internet-connected controller. That does not establish that every app feature is local. Ask what works without internet, a remote account or an available controller.

KNX documents TP-RF media couplers. Suitable equipment can combine media within a project. Specify functions actually passed by each gateway and diagnostic limits. A gateway does not automatically make all products or scenarios interoperable.
Budget for ownership
Compare equipment, fitting, configuration, tests and training, then licences, any subscriptions, batteries and visits. Establish ownership of accounts, backups and configuration project, changing service provider and services lost on cancellation.
