Bespoke joinery: checks before manufacturing
Published on 31 July 2026 · Verified on 18 September 2026 · The Mestravaux.lu team
An attractive drawing does not fully define usable furniture. Agree final dimensions, contents, room conditions and building interfaces before manufacture. This checklist identifies open questions; it does not replace the joiner’s design checks.
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Assign responsibility for final measurements.
- Describe loads as well as dimensions.
- Select materials for actual exposure.
- Identify proposed hardware and fixings.
- Preserve access to equipment and services.

Manufacturing from preliminary measurements
Specify who takes and approves final dimensions, and when plaster, flooring or other work affecting the room is complete. Record skirtings, angles, sockets, openings and relevant irregularities. Measurements for an initial estimate should not silently become manufacturing instructions.
| Erreur | Cause typique | Coût de reprise constaté |
|---|---|---|
Confusing available width with allowable span
A shelf for books is not the same brief as a decorative ledge. Describe contents and load distribution; have the designer specify material, thickness, supports and reinforcement. We do not prescribe a universal 90 cm maximum span. The actual configuration needs assessment.
Expecting varnish to eliminate moisture movement
The Forest Products Laboratory explains that wood exchanges moisture with air; coatings slow dimensional changes but do not prevent them. Agree material, edge protection, care and details near water. A supposedly resistant species or finish alone does not validate any assembly.
Ordering unspecified hardware
TANDEM runners illustrate variations in length and load class. Request exact reference, function and installation conditions for the offered fittings. A brand name alone does not define a mechanism. Have compatibility with drawer and contents checked; test cycles cannot simply become guaranteed years of service.

Request a quoteLeaving fixing decisions until delivery
Identify the wall construction and have necessary stability fixings specified. IKEA stresses anti-tip fixing suited to the substrate. Weight or a tight alcove fit does not establish stability. For a wall bed, also request the complete system instructions and compliant installation; chest-of-drawers advice is insufficient.
Blocking service access
Mark valves, sockets, connections, filters and integrated appliances. Define maintenance access, removal and ventilation using appliance instructions. Assign service alterations and making good. Record drawing changes and their cost before execution rather than leaving each contractor to assume another is responsible.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum shelf width?
No universal value here. The designer must assess material, thickness, supports and loads.
Does varnish make wood unaffected by moisture?
No. A coating does not eliminate dimensional movement.
Does a lump-sum quote prove poor quality?
No. Request missing specifications and scope before comparing.
Who should measure?
Identify responsibility for final measurement and approval in the contract.
Can heavy furniture remain unfixed?
Weight alone cannot answer that. Have stability checked and follow system instructions.
