Quote: brick façade repointing
E.g.: redoing the joints of an exposed brick facade

Before repointing, distinguish eroded mortar, cracks, damaged bricks and intentionally open joints. The quote should identify areas and the expected outcome without promising new joints will resolve all wall damp.
Assess bricks and mortar separately
Map retained and renewed joints and bricks needing other intervention. Report changing cracks, spalling and water marks. Recessed joints may be original; appearance alone does not establish lost function.
Preserve useful openings
Buildwise’s cavity-wall/roof detail connects drainage and open vertical joints. Identify such openings before repointing your wall. Do not fill every gap for uniform appearance; establish the wall construction first.
Match mortar and profile
Buildwise’s NIT 297 introduction distinguishes mortar components, execution and joint properties. Request a suitable reference or mix, texture and profile. Colour or hardness alone does not define compatibility.
Approve a trial
Agree dry colour, recess, texture and transitions to retained work. Specify removal that protects brick edges and preparation before filling. Do not impose one depth without examining the joints.
Assess complete water paths
Check sills, copings, connections and drainage where leaks are reported. New joints do not automatically make facing completely watertight or solve rising moisture. Support cracks may need separate repair.
Accept without automatic extras
Check completed zones, colour transitions, bricks and preserved openings. Request care and mortar references. Cleaning and water repellent need separate justification rather than unmeasured lifespan promises.

On quotation
Compare matching removal and filling scope with the same joint finish. Include access, trials, cleaning and any brick replacement. Façade area alone does not describe joint quantity or difficulty.
Subsidies and grants
No grant is deducted from the budget shown here. If a quote mentions support, request the exact scheme and confirmation of your eligibility before including it in financing.
Frequently asked questions
Should every open joint be filled?
No. Some drain water; have their function identified.
Do indoor marks prove defective joints?
They justify investigation, not a conclusion about one source.
Can joint colour change?
Approve a sample and check any procedures for building appearance.
Does repointing fix spalling bricks?
Assess bricks separately; new mortar does not automatically repair them.
Should water repellent follow?
Only where benefit and compatibility are established.
