Check material, old coating and operation first. Timber shutters, powder-coated aluminium, PVC and steel gates do not automatically take the same system. Paint renews a finish; it does not repair a weakened component.
Identify the assembly
Photograph overall views, details and damaged areas. State hinged or roller shutters, known material, factory finish and motorisation. Ask the manufacturer whether a roller curtain can be repainted: joints, rubbing and rolling differ from a fixed panel. Check warranty implications.
Check the coating system
CombiColor Multi-Surface distinguishes existing coating preparation, adhesion testing and metals such as aluminium and galvanised steel. Multisurface does not remove the need to check. Request a specification for the actual substrate and finish, particularly powder coating or PVC; assume neither universal primer nor direct application.
Separate corrosion and repair
Have corrosion, joints and fixings examined. Perforations, weakened sections and defective hinges require repair or replacement assessment before finishing. Filler and rust converter do not automatically restore strength. Identify areas and work outside painting.
Adapt timber shutter finishes
Choose opaque or visible grain after assessing the existing finish. Cetol relates durability to timber, construction and exposure rather than one maintenance interval for all shutters. Request a sample, system and signs that trigger maintenance.
Preserve movement and safety
Define removal, high access, storage, protection and parts that must remain uncoated. Coordinate safe shutdown and intervention on powered gates with the appropriate professional; check operation and safety devices afterwards. Agree weather conditions, handling times and exact colour; satin alone does not establish UV resistance.
