An unusual opening, historic mouldings or a particular design may justify bespoke manufacture. Describe the desired result, then have the opening, frame and threshold checked. Craft manufacture alone does not guarantee better insulation, greater security or longer life.
Define design and construction
Provide photographs, indicative dimensions and conservation constraints. Have solid timber, assembled components, panels and possible insulation described: a wood face does not describe the whole door. Approve profiles, colour and variation on a sample. Check permissions before ordering where heritage protection or appearance changes apply.
Survey frame and threshold too
Assess existing frame condition and fixing, masonry, floor levels, opening direction and usable passage. Discuss sealing, water management and insulation interfaces. Evaluate frame retention technically, not only to reduce removal.
Request project-specific performance
Bel’M distinguishes thermal coefficient Ud, acoustic performance and air-water-wind classification. Request evidence covering proposed dimensions, glazing and configuration. Species alone proves no value. Glazing does not automatically mean poorer insulation than a different solid door.
Check system security
Luxembourg Police recommends at least RC2 entrance doors and also advises on glazing. These are prevention recommendations, not an absolute-security guarantee. Request evidence for the offered doorset; more locking points alone do not prove a resistance class.
Plan for exposure and care
Identify orientation, driving rain and any canopy. Specify finish system, treated surfaces, inspections and care products. Agree checks of seals, hardware and worn areas according to condition and instructions, rather than a universal maintenance interval.
