Interior painting: six mistakes to avoid before and during work

Published on 31 July 2026 · Verified on 19 September 2026 · The Mestravaux.lu team

A disappointing finish can have several causes. Before ordering another coat, distinguish substrate defects, moisture, application and appearance expectations. These six checks are not a frequency ranking or a claim of observed Luxembourg repair costs.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Identify damp or mould causes before covering them.
  • Describe substrate repairs and expected finish.
  • Follow the product system rather than a universal coat count.
  • Plan protection, access, recoating and inspection conditions.
Interior painting: six mistakes to avoid before and during work

Covering unexplained damp

Bathroom paint does not repair leaks or inadequate ventilation. Logement.lu explains that surface mould removal is insufficient without identifying the cause. Report staining, condensation and recurrence; agree repairs and drying before finishing. Satin or anti-mould products cannot guarantee years without recurrence.

Confusing filling with levelling

Specify holes, cracks needing assessment, wallpaper and flatness defects. Thin filler or paint cannot straighten an overall uneven wall, as Buildwise explains. Price extensive repairs separately. Have unidentified old coatings assessed before sanding or stripping.

Choosing coats without assessing the substrate

Name primer and finish, suitability, reference and colour. A major colour change may require adaptation but does not automatically mean three coats. The Sikkens sheet describes a particular system; request current instructions for the actual paint rather than a universal recipe.

Forgetting protection and access

Agree furniture movement, protection of floors, skirting and equipment, and reinstatement. Identify delicate surfaces and items that must stay in place. Arrange suitable access for ceilings and stairs. Include cleaning and waste removal before an accident makes them necessary.

Confusing drying stages

Touch dry does not necessarily mean recoatable or washable. Sikkens separates these stages from properties developing later. Adapt scheduling and reuse to the current sheet, substrate and conditions. Four to twenty-four hours cannot replace every product's instructions.

Discussing finish only at handover

Approve colour and sheen samples in the room, particularly after major colour or lighting changes. Agree preparation and inspection conditions. Raking light can expose minor imperfections even after careful work and does not alone prove defective workmanship. Record specific discrepancies, photos and agreed next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Does bathroom paint eliminate mould?

It does not replace identifying and addressing the moisture cause.

Are three coats always needed over dark paint?

No. Specify the system after assessment and a trial where useful.

Can dry paint be cleaned immediately?

Check reuse and cleaning intervals separately from touch drying.

What if a defect appears afterwards?

Document and report it in writing for assessment and proposed action, without assuming cause or cost.
