Flooring installation: decisions to check before covering
Published on 31 July 2026 · Verified on 18 September 2026 · The Mestravaux.lu team
Unsuitable preparation can compromise new flooring. But a noise, bulge or crack does not identify its cause on its own. Clarify decisions before work and keep useful records if a defect appears.
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Do not replace moisture testing with arbitrary waiting.
- Match preparation to substrate and finish.
- Allow the movements required by the system.
- Check added layers for compatibility.
- Investigate a defect before selecting its repair.

Judging dryness by time alone
Weber’s anhydrite guidance explains that elapsed time is insufficient. Request the appropriate moisture result for substrate and finish. Waiting a few extra days without checking again does not prove the problem is resolved; a universal drying rate is not evidence.
Treating levelling as a cure for every defect
Have flatness, soundness, cracks, old adhesive and finished height assessed. Identify system requirements and the preparation needed to meet them. One tolerance cannot cover every finish; covering a defective substrate does not automatically make it suitable. Investigation and any necessary removal come before the decision.
Restraining a floating floor
EPLF notes that heavy fitted items can restrict movement in floating laminate. Agree how fixed furniture, thresholds and edges follow the instructions. Do not adopt a universal gap dimension or fill a required movement space merely because it looks unattractive.
Adding underlay without checking
Extra thickness can alter the intended assembly. Alpha Vinyl Pad Herringbone prohibits extra underlay beneath its integrated pad. With underfloor heating, check the full assembly and protocol; Buildwise highlights this coordination for wood flooring. A generic heating-compatible label does not describe every combination.

Request a quoteSanding without assessing the remaining surface
Not every wood-looking floor can be sanded. Kährs distinguishes renewable multilayer constructions from thin, non-sandable veneers. Assess remaining usable surface and earlier repairs. Total board thickness alone cannot authorise abrasive renovation.
Selecting a repair from one symptom
Buildwise explains that hollow sound alone is insufficient to reject tiling; extent and associated defects matter. Report movement, damaged joints, moisture and change over time, then request assessment. Likewise, a bulging wood floor does not prove only a missing perimeter gap. Keep photographs and correspondence before alterations.
Frequently asked questions
Is levelling compound always required?
No. Its use must follow the substrate assessment and the selected installation requirements.
Does a water-resistant board waterproof a bathroom?
No. Check system applications and junctions; some vinyl products exclude shower zones.
Can bulging wood flooring simply be trimmed at the edge?
Not necessarily. Establish the cause before choosing a remedy.
What should I keep if defects appear?
Product references, quote, invoices, checks, dated photos and correspondence. Clarify applicable contractual warranties; French arrangements do not automatically apply in Luxembourg.
